Press ReleaseLabor on Labor Day Funds Pediatric Cancer ResearchUmbilical Cord Blood Bank Pledges Donation to Alex's Lemonade Stand Philadelphia, PA (September 1, 2005) CorCell, a national, private umbilical cord blood bank, announced today the promise of a monetary donation to Alex's Lemonade Stand, a foundation dedicated to funding pediatric cancer research. CorCell's donation will commemorate every baby delivered this Labor Day at partner hospitals in major cities across the United States. CorCell's Labor Day initiative promises a significant donation to the non-profit organization founded by Alexandra "Alex" Scott, the young girl who established the research-minded charity while battling neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer currently being treated with stem cells found in umbilical cord blood. "We"re inspired by the bravery and passion of this child who understood at such a young age the importance of research to advance treatments for childhood cancers which touch so many families," said Marcia Laleman, president and chief executive officer, CorCell "As a company dedicated to the promise of umbilical cord blood stem cells which are at the core of this emerging medical revolution, we're honored to lend our support to Alex's Lemonade Stand, an organization that shares in our vision of the future and belief in the power of science and all of the hope possessed within." Umbilical cord blood collection is a simple, non-invasive procedure, where a doctor, nurse or mid-wife draws stem cell-rich blood from the umbilical cord immediately following delivery. Because umbilical cord blood stem cells are collected after birth, they are non-controversial. In fact, if not collected, they will be discarded as medical waste. Today, more than 300,000 cord blood collections have taken place in the hope of protecting a child's future through the evolving medical applications of umbilical cord blood stem cells to treat disease. In fact, the Institute of Medicine reports that stem cells have saved more than 20,000 lives in the United States alone. "We're thrilled CorCell is helping to advance the pediatric cancer research we support through the foundation," said Jay Scott, executive director, Alex's Lemonade Stand and father of foundation namesake, Alex. "My wife and I understand the promise involved with collecting umbilical cord blood and decided we would not miss the opportunity to collect and store when our fourth child was born in 2003." CorCell's Labor Day partners include the following hospitals from across the United States:
Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation is a non-profit organization. The mission of the organization is to raise money for childhood cancer and to encourage and educate others to raise money for childhood cancer by holding their own lemonade stands. The fundraising plan is as simple as Alex's front yard beginning — thousands of lemonade stands across the country organized by volunteers, community groups, corporations and businesses to benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand. Alex's family and supporters are committed to continuing her inspiring legacy until a cure for all pediatric cancers is found. For more information, go to www.alexslemonade.org. About CorCell
