85 Labor Day Births Deliver for Childhood Cancer Research
Umbilical Cord Blood Bank Donates $5,000 to Alex's Lemonade Stand

Philadelphia, PA (September 8, 2005) – CorCell, a national, private umbilical cord blood bank, announced today the company will donate $5,000 to Alex's Lemonade Stand, a foundation dedicated to funding pediatric cancer research. CorCell's donation commemorates the 85 babies born on Labor Day at partner hospitals in major cities across the United States.

"We are thankful to CorCell and participating hospitals for their support in helping to find much needed cures for childhood cancers," said Jay Scott, executive director, Alex's Lemonade Stand, and father of the non-profit organization's namesake. Alexandra "Alex" Scott, the young girl who established the research minded charity, succumbed to neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer currently being treated with umbilical cord blood stem cells.

Today, umbilical cord blood stem cells have been collected from more than 300,000 births in the U.S. alone. In fact, the Institute of Medicine reports these stem cells have saved more than 20,000 U.S. lives. "We're delighted to make this donation to Alex's Lemonade Stand," said Marcia Laleman, president and CEO, CorCell "We look forward to continuing to support this extraordinary organization and Alex's very special wish that, as she would say, all children get better."

CorCell's Labor Day partners include the following hospitals from across the United States:

  • 35 Labor Day births at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Women, Orlando, Florida
  • 25 Labor Day births at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts
  • Three Labor Day births at Medical City Dallas Hospital, Dallas, Texas
  • 15 Labor Day births at Miller Children's Hospital, Long Beach, California
  • Seven Labor Day births at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
