CorCell: Umbilical Cord Blood Banking

Cord Blood Freezing

Processing is an important part of cord blood preservation. Time and temperature play an important role in the storage of a cord blood sample. Our facility is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Before the cord blood freezing procedure can begin, all umbilical cord samples undergo testing for bacterial contamination. To protect the cord blood sample, it is placed in multiple compartment cryo-bags then placed in a stainless steel sleeve and then into a protective sleeve. Contact one of our CorCell client representatives to learn more about the cord blood freezing procedure.

Cord Blood Freezing: Storage Procedures

The cord blood sample is initially cryopreserved in 10% dimethyl sulfoxide, then it is quarantined in a vapor phase of liquid nitrogen until confirmation of infectious disease testing.

Once the confirmation is received that the sample is free of infections disease, the final freezing process begins. The sample is placed in liquid nitrogen containers at regulated temperatures. These containers are equipped with a device that monitors the temperature 24 hours a day. These monitors operate inside and outside of the storage facility for extra security. The samples are labeled with pertinent information such as an identifier code, the mother's name, storage date and an assigned inventory number. Written standard operating procedures are in place to guide identification of cord blood samples for collection, processing, storage and transplant procedures.

The laboratory and storage facility has a proven track record with many successful cord blood transplants. The laboratory maintains all required regulatory licenses and certificates of accreditation while engaging in sound ethical business practices. While the FDA regulates blood banking, they do not have regulations in place for private cord blood freezing and storage. CorCell's facility is also a Blood Center that is required to follow all FDA regulations and good manufacturing practices guidelines.
