Stem cell storage with CorCell consists of four easy steps: collection, transportation, processing and freezing. Each step has been designed to minimize the steps involved in the procedure, thereby reducing the likelihood of error and allowing doctors or midwives to focus on you and your new baby.
A large number of umbilical stem cells will provide a better cord blood transplant, but this doesn't necessarily require a high volume of blood. It is possible for a collection of 40 cc's to contain a higher count than a 100-cc collection. Each additional step in the collection procedure increases the chance for bacterial contamination, and for mistakes to be made. CorCell's cord blood procedure is simple. Just wipe, insert needle and collect into a closed system bag. Learn more about stem cell storage procedures by using CorCell's contact us page.
The transportation portion of the stem cell storage process requires great care. Time and temperature constraints require that the cord blood be transported to the stem cell storage facility by a medical courier who understands the need to preserve the integrity of the unit. CorCell's medical team is specially trained in the specifics of handling these type of shipments.
Our processing facility has a 24/7 staff prepared to process each collection within 48 hours. Once the cord blood collections are processed, they are stored in liquid nitrogen at regulated temperatures.
The liquid nitrogen containers used for stem cell storage are equipped with a 24 hour monitored system. This system is situated internal and external to the storage facility and includes a backup system for even more security. Stem cell storage units are labeled with an identifier code, mothers name, date of storage as well as an assigned inventory number. Proper identification of cord blood stem cell storage units for use in collection, processing, storage and transplantation is assured via written standard operating procedures.
